Spoon Carving
Using a saw, axe, and selection of carving knives we will be using green woodworking techniques to turn a freshly cut log into a practical and beautiful spoon for you to take home.
The art of spoon carving, in recent years, has become very popular with crafts people and bushcraft enthusiasts. There is something very satisfying about using simple tools to create a wooden spoon for you to stir, serve or eat with. But the humble spoon is just the beginning! The skills used to carve a spoon can be transferred to all sorts of green wood creations. From other cutlery like cups, knives and bowls to much larger projects such as stools, tables and even canoe paddles!
This course is great for people completely new to green wood work as well as those who have done a bit but are looking to develop their knowledge and skills further.
The Course consists of:
- Instruction and demonstration of safe use of edged tools.
- Introduction to sawing, axing and the different knife techniques
- Discussion of wood types, how wood grows and how this helps us shape it
- Sawing and splitting wood down to size and creating a spoon ‘blank’
- planning out a beautiful and practical design, informed and inspired by the piece of wood we are working with
- Using a small axe to further shape the wood
- Using a carving knife to refine the wood
- Using a ‘spoon knife’ to create the bowl of the spoon
- Making finishing touches and taking your new creation home!
- Snacks (fruit and biscuits) and lunch (veggie soup and posh bread) provided.
Group size is between 3 and 8 participants, and the course takes place at our woodland camp, on the edge of a lovely mixed woodland near Bath, a stones throw away from the river Avon.
